San Diego, California is a beautiful coastal city that is known for being a popular vacationing spot. Filled with many historical and exciting attractions, there are an endless amount of ways to spend a vacation in this beautiful city. Among these attractions is Shelter Island, which makes for an excellent first stop in San Diego, and is certain to make your vacation here very memorable.

About Shelter Island
The first place everyone should stop while on Shelter Island is Shoreline Park. This park expands a mile along the outer coastline of Shelter Island and features many amenities for its guests. With picnic tables, a playground for children, fishing piers, and many places to view public artwork, there is so much to do in Shoreline Park. This park is open from 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily, and is an excellent place to stop while exploring Shelter Island.

There are many monuments and historical locations on Shelter Island. Some of these monuments include Tunaman’s Memorial, Friendship Bell, and the Pearl of the Pacific Rim. The first of these attractions, Tunaman’s Memorial, is a statue which stands to honor the many sailors who manned the tuna fleets in San Diego Bay in the early 1900’s. The second monument, the Friendship Bell, is better known as the Yokohama Friendship Bell. This monument was constructed to symbolize the friendship between San Diego and Yokohama, Japan in 1958. Lastly, the Pearl of the Pacific Rim, otherwise known as the Pacific Rim Park is a concrete and mosaic piece of artwork which was constructed by four architecture students from the four sister cities of San Diego Vladivostok, Tijuana, Yantai, and China. This mural was designed to represent the collaboration of artistic styles of each of these cultures, making it a fantastic place to visit while on Shelter Island.

There are also many places to eat on Shelter Island as well, one of which being the Bali Hai Restaurant. Serving Polynesian food in a contemporary setting, Bali Hai is known for their amazing cocktails during happy hour and for offering a fantastic ocean view from the dining room. Open from 11:30 to 9 p.m. from Monday through Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, the Bali Hai restaurant in the perfect place to dine while on Shelter Island.
